I think it's shitty behaviour - but what's the alternative? I've found good fresh domains in the past, and let them drop when the project I registered them for (inevitably) doesn't go anywhere, only to see them grabbed by domain squatter. Recently I listed an unneeded but above average (trademarkable, keyword, .com) on HN as free to anyone who could use it, with the stipulation that they pass it on if subsequently not used. I'd be glad to see more of that.
