A similar observation on my part that corroborates this: as I started reading the piece, saw that the hacker being interviewed (Myria) was described as female, my immediate intuition (while knowing no other details about the person) was that she was rather more likely to be transgender than biologically-born female. Similar to you, I have little provable intuition as to why this correlation apparently exists, though.
