- Electron doesn't support mobile so I don't understand this comment. Their are lib for python on mobile good, bad, or evil I don't know. It isn't just a lack of DOM related performance issues it is also V8 performance issues, chromium performance issues, and electron performance issues. When you stack a engine on top of a engine on top of another engine you can't expect to achieve awesome speeds. And if you are making a desktop app why would you even care about making a website of that app?
>Java
Again if you are making a desktop app why would you also need a website performing the same task? React Native is for mobile apps electron is for desktop apps so I don't understand why you are bring this up as well.
Electron exist same reason nodejs exist webbies to scare to learn another language. JS isn't bad, but how people use it makes it bad. I should actually say programmers are to scare or lazy to learn alternative solutions to a problem. It is simpler to use what you already know then to try something else. What does electron bring to the table? A way for someone that know JS, css, and html to produce a cross platform desktop app that is it. You don't gain performance, security, and it isn't the only cross platform solution like Java once was. People use to use Java only because it was the only cross platform solution. It had horrible memory leaks and all sorts of issues that still plague it to today. Yet it was the only cross platform desktop solution of its time. That is why electron is seen as useless to me I know how to program in c, c++, c#, JS, and elixir. I would probably learn python stack if I wanted a cross platform solution to a desktop app.
- ikurei 9y ago> Electron doesn't support mobile so I don't understand this comment. No, but most of the codebase can be reused for the mobile app using phonegap/cordova. > Electron exist same reason nodejs exist webbies to scare to learn another language. I hate this way of seeing "webbies" as a lesser kind of engineer. I've been on both sides, doing low-level development in C, full stack on .Net, and now Node.js, and I choose the tool that better serves me at each point. Many of us choose to use JS/Node/Electron because of practical reasons, not because we are "too scared". You may think we are misguided, and we might very well be, but there's no need to be so smug about it.
- Can_Not 9y ago> V8 performance issues Python certainly isn't faster than V8. Maybe in the same class of speed, but certainly faster is not one of it's advertisable advantages. > webbies to scare to learn another language. > why would you also need a website > to scare or lazy to learn alternative solutions This is exactly the useless, vacuous discussion points I'm taking about. You're literally complaining about electron itself and JavaScript (mostly points that are invalid, misleading, or ad hominems, too) and putting zero emphasis on what alternatives are actually good and why they are great on their own merit.
- smilesnd 9y ago> V8 performance issues >Full sentence "DOM related performance issues it is also V8 performance issues, chromium performance issues, and electron performance issues." -It is true that V8 by it self is faster then python. That small chunk you took out of my one sentence was speaking of the entire pipeline that your code has to travel to render to screen. With python I have a multitude of ways to create a desktop application may it be a console app to gui base one where I can take care of performance issues simply calling a c/c++ lib and such. Javascript to my knowledge currently doesn't have a way to use c/c++ lib, doesn't have a direct route to being made into a console app, can't be compiled like python (mattering who you ask what you use and such matters what gains you see and such but that is a whole different ball park for now). Right now I can make a quick little python console app it will run only with its engine. For you to make a console app you would have to use everything listed above and plus some. > webbies to scare to learn another language. "I should actually say programmers are to scare or lazy to learn alternative solutions to a problem." -I corrected myself to not just single out web developers. > why would you also need a website -Don't know why this was single out, but yeah sure why would you need a website with the same element as your desktop app? From what I know of electron what it provides that website doesn't is a desktop icon and desktop notification. Outside of that it literally doesn't do anything else a website can't do. > to scare or lazy to learn alternative solutions -True for most things in life not just programming. When you got a hammer then everything looks like a nail. -To the final point yes I was complaining about the short comings of electron because the topic was "Do you think electron is good for building desktop app?". Yes I am complaining about javascript which is the only language electron supports. You pulled out 4 points which I don't know why you didn't display the entire sentence, but whateves. Seems like the only invalid point I had is if you cut up the V8 sentence even though I was speaking of the entire pipeline and not just the V8 engine. The "ad hominems" since it is latin I don't think you can just toss a 's' at the end of it to make it plural. So people don't have to google it like I had to (Ad hominem (Latin for "to the man" or "to the person"[1]), short for argumentum ad hominem, is now usually understood as a logical fallacy in which an argument is rebutted by attacking the character, motive, or other attribute of the person making the argument, or persons associated with the argument, rather than attacking the substance of the argument itself.). I wasn't attacking a individual nor trying to win a argument just stating what I believe in and what is currently a issue in our industry. No one strives to be a engineer in our field now a days we strive to be okay programmers. We strive to have a easy life and take easy routes instead of grunting and fighting for things to improve. You want everything to be rainbows and unicorns that shit out cupcakes good for you. If you ask me what a piece of technology is good for I will tell you the trade offs because everything comes with them. Electron trade off is you sacrifice security, performance(compare to other languages and lib that where design around generating desktop applications), lack of control over engine update cycles(never know what engine update might break your shit), a language that was design for client server relationship causing it to lack some of the basic abilities that other languages bring to the table, a large code base. I could keep coming up with reason for electron not to be used for multitude of reasons, but I got code to write and things to do. The only benefit that electron brings to the table is to write desktop apps using js, html, and css. Can you tell me anything else it does? And no we are not talking about websites here we are talking about building desktop apps. If the question was something like "Is electron a good solution for porting your website to desktop app" or something along those line then yeah sure we could talk about single code base and such. But, nope we are literally talking about using electron to only make desktop app. It is shit doesn't mean it shouldn't exist but it is shit none the less when it is compare to the other options out there.
