- pg 19y agoGood idea. I just did. The NYT has been completely pwned in this case. Either Stone didn't ask whether there was anyone else doing this (unlike a NYT reporter) or the GCC founders lied to him, because they certainly know about Kirkland North. After all, KN's founders include the original author of the game at Yale.
- jakewolf 19y agoI did too. Stupid autoreply, "Thank you for writing to us. Your message has been received and will be forwarded to the reporter you contacted. Please note that messages are delivered once per day, at 8 a.m. (EST). Because of the high volume of responses we get from readers, not all communications can be responded to personally. But be assured that we want to hear your thoughts. (Please do not reply to this e-mail as this address is not monitored for incoming messages.)" So much for getting leads to reporters easily in a timely manner.

The NYT is pretty good in this respect. I've managed to nail them down to admit an advert for google jobs was dressed up as an article ~ http://flickr.com/photos/bootload/1685662827/ http://flickr.com/photos/bootload/1685662827/ from this hackernews article ~ http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=70827 http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=70827
- Alex3917 19y agoFor reference, the NYT has covered Internet-mediated locally social games like this before, including various versions Zombies vs. Humans and the now defunct nygames.net that was very popular circa 2006. It does seem like GXC currently has more traction than KN though, although we've yet to see anything in the genre become a successful business despite at least a couple dozen attempts.
- pg 19y agoIt does seem like GXC currently has more traction than KN Don't believe everything you read in the NYT. They've run games at a lot of schools, but none of them really took off. Whereas the game Kirkland North ran for Stanford spread to a quarter of the student body in two weeks.
- Alex3917 19y ago"Don't believe everything you read in the NYT." Don't even get me started on the NYT. Every time they mention the illegal wiretapping they still describe it as starting after 9/11, even though their own reporting shows this to be false. The whole paper is bullshit propaganda.
- myoung8 19y agoBut just because a quarter of the student body signed up doesn't mean it was a huge hit. I created an account, deployed a few troops, then got bored and never came back. I'd like to see some stats on how sticky the app is.
- bootload 19y ago"... It does seem like GXC currently has more traction than KN ... Don't believe everything you read in the NYT ..." But they are trying by loading up on "press ammo".
