1) Read a lot in an area you're really interested in. 2) Learn something interesting 3) Teach it to someone else (write something about what you've learned, sit a friend down, ring up your mum) Repeat. My problem is that now that I work in the area I'm interested in, and by the time I'm done with my work day my brain is completely exhausted, so all I want to do is lounge in front of the telly or similar instead of getting more into the field other than what I'm working on :( (I'm a philosophy post-doc.)
