Ask HN: What lie to say at interview about my previous Uber-like employer?
It is a common wisdom that you should not talk bad about your previous employer, no matter what. I understand there may be very good reasons for that [1], but that also means I should be dishonest when answering future employer's questions.
Let's say my previous employer was Uber and I left BEFORE everybody knew how toxic Uber culture is [2]. Not only that - everybody knew Uber is a unicorn, successful and dynamic, using cutting edge technology, certainly a stellar career opportunity. So why did YOU left only after X months?
I can either avoid the question or lie, both put me at a disadvantage. Saying "I left Uber only after X months to spend time with family or reevaluate my priorities before choosing my next career move" [3] just sounds like a total bullshit.

- brudgers 10y agoSaying less is a way of not saying something bad without lying. For example, "I left because I realized I wanted something different," doesn't disparage the former employer and is the distilled truth and is not bullshit and is emphasizes the action rather than the injury from a bad workplace. Good luck.
