It's a nice idea, but I have a feeling it's never going to be better than human enthusiasts/experts, who you can get to identify plants from photos for free already[1]. I can immediately think of all kinds of challenges that are really hard to overcome: diseased leaves, different seasons, plus all the usual glare/shading/background issues.
