  There is a difference between giving anecdotal evidence and speaking from years of experience. The latter is often the best you can get, and much better than set-up studies, for "soft" controversial or topics. When listening to someone else's shared experience, just don't forget to understand it in context. Of course it's helpful to know a little bit about that person.
