I'm from Sweden, and I've visited the US several times, and one of the first things I noticed was the poor state of the roads. I've been to Seattle (didn't drive, but rode along in cars a couple of times), and NYC (drove from downtown Manhattan to middle of nowhere Pennsylvania and back to Newark). Even the freeways around NJ and PA were in a sorry state. So if the US spends money on their roads, I'd hate to see what happens with things they don't spend money on...
