Developers and 'QA' were the same people at the best companies I've worked at. That solves that ridiculous 'prestige' problem you mentioned which is really just diva-developer behavior of a different flavor. If someone can't/won't write a test for a feature they've developed or fix the test suite when it breaks, I don't want to work with them.
