I have worked from home for about 9 months last year. It did not go particularly well, but now I miss it. I think for a software engineer to be able to work from home and not be impaired by it, most of the team has to be remote. If you are the only remote worker in the group you are going to be shut out of discussions, communication, decision making, etc. If you possess a unique skill and do bite sized pieces of work in agile setting it may work to be the only remote person on the team. Otherwise I found it difficult.
Personally I did not find distractions to be a problem and problem worked more hours from home than when in the office.
Another problem with working from home is lack of human interaction. After a few months you start to want to talk to people (other than your family).
