I came to the US on an H1-B to fill a position that was open for 2 years. They simply could not find a qualified candidate. I don't have a PhD, and I wasn't educated in the United States. I was hired because of all the extra-curricular projects I pursued in electrical engineering, embedded systems, and most notably, security. There is nothing _at all_ preventing an American from doing what I do, but my field is dominated by Europeans. It could be laws, it could be culture. Whatever it is, American companies need these skills and they can't find them in the US.
