I did my first ever tech talk at a meetup just a few weeks ago (http://bit.ly/2oIWHiH http://bit.ly/2oIWHiH). I hope I prepared sufficiently and didn't suffer too much from most of the pitfalls discussed, but I have been to plenty of meetups which are exactly as the OP describes. Almost all of them seem to be thinly veiled networking / hiring events from my experience.
