I hate the airlines too but holding up Amtrak[1] as the model isn't going to win you any points. The reason airlines "hate" passengers is because they basically break even on shuttling economy passengers and look at economy passengers as more of a cost than a profit center. Sure they're making more money now because of all the tacked on fees, but those are a relatively recent trend. The real profit is from business/first passengers and from the miles/credit card game they play.
