From the outside I'd say that the USA is not that far from a police state and getting closer with time. One would have to look away on purpose to not see the militarization of police. But don't think it's only the US, this is a trend we can notice in Europe too. As if the conditions of life were evolving towards possible uprising due to say growing poverty, diminishing buying power, increase in food insecurity, increasing gap between the rich and poor, unsustainable economy closing on its limits, etc. and the governments taking precautionary measures to protect themselves.
