It almost certainly is. Sky Map works well on my G1, and that definitely doesn't have a gyroscope. I suspect the difference will be in both speed of updates and accuracy. It doesn't matter (in fact, you won't even notice) if the phone is a little "off" when pointed at the sky, but I can't see the compass+accelerometer trick providing accurate absolute positioning for a fast-paced game.
