I think Occams razor applies. We may not fully understand insanity, and morally the act of segmenting these people from society can be debated. That doesn't mean we have to jump on the first outlandish theory of them channeling the dead because it 'sounds cool'

No, but thinking about strange outlandish theorys - who apparently work for them - can help improve our model.
