The waste of working on Mir isn't the problem IMHO. Canonical has a ton of market share, at the time Mir was released it was already looking like getting AMD and Nvidia were going to take a while to support Wayland. Splitting the ecosystem for no technical reason came across as inconsiderate of Canonical.
