Pro hacker tip: extracting your activity log from The Facebook
Imagine you've decided that you want to leave that soul sucking website, and you want to take all those links you've carefully curated since 2005 or so. Facebook's archive tool isn't going to help you. You'll likely be irritated to find that your special zip bundle doesn't actually contain much of anything.
But don't worry, there is a way! Just follow these steps:
1. Open your activity page.
2. Put a heavy object on your keyboard's 'down arrow' key.
3. Next, wait for an hour or two while it loads the entire endless scrolling page.
4. Once it finally hits the bottom, use your browser's save feature to save a web archive.
Now you have a record of, among other things, all the links you posted over the last ~1.2 decades.
Deleting The Facebook is up there in the top 10 greatest things I've ever done with my life. It re-expanded my whole universe, reintroducing such things as mystery and anticipation. There was a kind of perpetual 'wavefunction collapse' that The Facebook imposed on my social and spiritual outlook. I really needed to let it 'decohere', permanently.
That said, leaving The Facebook for good is a personal decision that I made. It was very good for me. By all means, don't leave if you don't want to!
