So you mean.. what exactly?
- pc86 10y ago"Everyone in a red state is racist while I live in a post-racial utopia." Or something like that, I'd imagine.
- beat 10y agoIn the South, whites don't mind if blacks are around, as long as they're not uppity. In the North, whites don't mind if blacks are uppity, as long as they're not around. Segregation is worse in the north than in the south.
- splintercell 10y agoLol, I heard it differently, 'In South they are supposed to hate us in theory but not in practice, in north they are suppose to love us in theory but not in practice.'
- beat 10y agoI'm still waiting for the white people from the north to throw a fit because I said this. It's not always well received...
- atria 10y ago... but so true. I grew up in the South and am in an inter-racial marriage. After I moved up to a northern "blue" state, I met more overtly racists people than I thought possible. It was shocking.
- humbleMouse 10y agoI'm white and from minneapolis and I think your analysis is spot on.
- beat 10y agoYeah, I'm in Minneapolis too. When things blew up with the cops and BLM, the rest of the country was shocked that it could happen in nice, tolerant, liberal Minneapolis. Not me. :( North Minneapolis is as segregated as anything the South can offer.
- pault 10y agoI grew up in Seattle and have since lived in a few southern cities; I agree with you completely.
- bean11 10y agoTake a massively complex complex topic and smash it into bite size blurb. Check! Semi believable. Check! Mirroring. Check! Signaling an "understanding" at lease one layer greater then common knowledge. Check! We got ourselves a high quality upper class meme.
- eli_gottlieb 10y agoWhat are those percentages religion-wise, and in relation to the one-party state that the South calls governance?
- throwaway7645 10y agoOne party state? Louisiana historically has been fairly left leaning. Democrat governor and Democrat senators/congress. Recently that went conservative with Jindal, but I'd hardly call the region one party. With the exception of South Louisiana, most of it and Arkansas (exception of liberal little rock) are in the bible belt, so things tend to be very old school (votes tend to go red). Religion wise, the South is mostly protestant with the exception of Catholic south Louisiana.
- ADefenestrator 10y agoRight/left Democrat/Republican is also a bit different at the local level around those states. There's the moderate conservatives, AKA Democrats, and the hardline conservatives, Republicans.
- Arizhel 10y agoYou seem to not understand the segregation in the South. If you're black, you're not going to be well-accepted if you move into an upper middle-class all-white neighborhood. Yeah, there's lots of black people in Atlanta, but they live "on the other side of the tracks", in all-black (and poor) neighborhoods. Of course, racism exists everywhere, but it's generally worse in the South. A black guy moving into a nice neighborhood in Silicon Valley isn't going to have that problem; his main problem will be feeling isolated because he's the only black guy, and all his friends, neighbors, and coworkers come from a different (sub)culture than him.
- liveoneggs 10y agoAtlanta, in particular, is one place where it is OK to be successful and black, or gay and black, or nerdy and black, or just whatever. Not all black people are poor and living amidst crime; you get to learn that when you live somewhere where they make up more than 2% of the population.
- ghostly_s 10y agoPretty sure when the OP referenced 1/2 acre backyards and $130k-$200k they were not talking about Atlanta.
- throwaway7645 10y agoTrue. Mostly anywhere in Louisiana, Arkansas, many parts of Texas, and probably all of Alabama and Mississippi. I also don't see large racial issues in my community with the exception being what happened in Baton Rouge last year. Something the South is historically bad at is education. I think we have the 5 lowest scoring states.
- logfromblammo 10y agoIf you're LGBT, or atheist, or a noncitizen, you have to stay really close to the larger cities. And you'd best not let too many people know about your nonconformity. And the cops are still racist. Not quite so blatantly and obviously racist against blacks any more, but it still comes out in the statistics.
