I always wondered if astronauts were given some informal information how to end their lives quickly, in case there is no hope for their recovery. I know I wouldn't like sitting on the moon waiting for oxygen to slowly run out...
- ge96 10y agocyanide haha man that would suck edit: not sure how it would be administered. Also when you suffocate do you just slowly pass out or is it more violent, probably violent. Maybe introduce some nitrous oxide or something.
- teraflop 10y agoApparently, Carl Sagan was under the impression that astronauts were given cyanide pills, but NASA and actual astronauts have denied this, pointing out that poison is unnecessary when you can just open the hatch and depressurize your spacecraft. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contact_(1997_American_film)#NASA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contact_(1997_American_film)#N...
- nsxwolf 10y agoI heard somewhere they had the choice between depressurizing the lander or "starving to death". This might have been in an interview with William Safire. If true... that would imply their oxygen supply would have lasted a very long time.
