Yeah it's sort of like religion all over again just in a different context. It seems that imagination for humans is more or less inescapable and in the end even if we get really nerdy about it, we end up in the same place we started. Undetermined and all about what you want to believe to be true.
- Moshe_Silnorin 10y agoSaying "Yeah it's sort of like religion all over again just in a different context" is sort of like a religion, but in a different context. It seems that making grand dismissals is more or less inescapable, and in the end we get really nerdy about it, and use atheistic language while we make our psuedoreligious grand dismissals.

- ythn 10y agoSwap out prophets for celebrity "scientists"/eccentric billionaires, and swap out scripture with speculative pseudo-scifi publications, and you have a new religion!
- cestith 10y agoScientology is decades old. At this point so are the supposed real-life Jedi, too. And aura healers. And... So you're not just on to something, there are actual examples to back you up.
- unit91 10y agoI agree but I take an even stronger view: religion provides answers to The Ultimate Questions: who am I? why am I here? is there a God (or are there gods)? what happens when I die? etc. So while the various naturalistic metaphysical theories are not themselves religious endeavors, there is a great deal of overlap with religion in terms of their applications to the mind.
