It all reminds me of a line by (I think) Douglas Coupland, about Gen X. I may be mangling this but it was something about being the first generation to spend most of their careers demonstrating aptitude rather than actually doing work. I seem to recall a moment in graduate school at CMU where I realized that demonstrating aptitude had actually gotten me as far as it was going to get me. I estimate it only took a brief decade or so of sulking before I managed to act on this realization.
