Can't stress enough how much I agree with this. I've seen far too many businesses off-loading all billing jobs to an external provider (Stripe, Braintree,...) and then facing troubles when subscriptions get a bit more diverse and greater flexibility and control is needed. Basically, let an external service handle the PCI compliance part (storing sensitive data) and just use their tokens in your billing implementation.
