There is the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature project, founded in 2010. They brought physicists from outside climate science to do a clean reanalysis of temperature data. I think they really kept open the possibility that NASA, NOAA and the UK Met Office had all processed and interpreted the temperature data wrong.
