Ask HN: Semantic Versioning or Identical Versioning?
My company has both an Android app and an iOS App. While the set of features they provide are more or less identical, the bugs that appear are different and unpredictable, and sometimes one developer gets ahead of the other in terms of new features.
Our iOS and Android Dev want to use semantic versioning for our app. Right most number for bugfixes, middle for features, and leftmost for non backwards compatible changes.
Our CTO wants to use identical versioning. If one app is at 4.1.1 then so is the other. Changes must then get pushed with some kind of parity.
Personally I am for the former, and don't really understand the latter.
What kind of versioning does your company use? Why?
