This is totally correct.
back in 2001 when the tech bubble busted, and no one was hiring, I didn't have much work experience, so I worked for a company for Free, 10-15 hours a week for 9 months, just for the work experience. I didn't consider it exploitation, because I there were no other options out there at the time. However, i did get out of there as soon as an opportunity presented itself.
If you can find a better $$ rate, you should take it right away.
See, if you can get an entry level position at snap chat, I hear they pay like 9000$ a month for interns!!!
