In a time of battery powered computers CPU cycles spent equate to energy consumed equates to reduction in battery life.
Even if your program does not impact the user's experience of runtime behaviour (latencies, delays) it's still impacting in the user's experience on his devices recharge cycle.
Also spinning fans generate noise, which is just as a nuisance as a laggy program.
