Does Apple Maps support offline map downloads? If so this is a great selling point.
- lorenzhs 10y agoI don't think so, but Google Maps does on both iOS and Android. Quite handy when abroad.
- 4ad 10y agoThere are way better apps than Google Maps for offline maps.
- lorenzhs 10y agoYes, for that I usually use maps.me which is based on OSM. But most people don't know about these or find it too cumbersome to have to download the maps upfront, etc. Google's offline routing is also a lot better and faster.
- 4ad 10y agoApple Maps?? The competition is so much better. For offline navigation in car: HERE WeGo (maps.me also works, but HERE WeGo is way better). For offline navigation on foot in cities: maps.me (also HERE WeGo works, but I think maps.me UI is better for this). For offline open street maps suitable for offroad: Pocket Earth (works particularly well in Europe). For offline maps in general suitable for offroad: Gaia GPS or the lower cost Topo Maps (works particularly well in USA). And if you are into serious off-trailing Gaia GPS (and probably Topo Maps too) allow you to use your own maps as well.
- zie 10y agoI meant mapping in general, not specifically Apple Maps. Apple Maps, will cache a little bit, like if you are connected, get directions and start a route, then lose connection, it will still work, but if you get turned around(off course), then it may or may not work, depending on if it's cached locally(in my experience it usually won't). Maps.me is my goto offline map solution, it uses Open Street Maps.
