- paulcole 10y agoGreat article from Grantland (RIP) on Diplomacy: http://grantland.com/features/diplomacy-the-board-game-of-the-alpha-nerds/ http://grantland.com/features/diplomacy-the-board-game-of-th...
- greenhatman 10y ago“How could you do this to me? After everything I’ve done for you.” “I guess I’m just a hard muthafucka like that.” Damn, that's funny.
- jnordwick 10y agoThe writer got absolutely roasted in that article. LOL. “Are you going to be paid for writing this story?” a Scottish player asked me. “Because I am losing three days’ wages to be here so that I can get screwed by you.” (why does HN still not support decent formatting)
- jlgaddis 10y agoI usually quote like this: > “Are you going to be paid for writing this story?” a Scottish player asked me. “Because I am losing three days’ wages to be here so that I can get screwed by you." The leading > and italics make it clear that it's quoted and it avoids making the reader scroll horizontally. Not perfect but it's about the best you can do here, AFAIK.
- jnordwick 10y agoIt is best you can do and it is horrible HN still doesn't have good and easy comment formatting. Try posting small piece of code. You hear me HN?!
- Keverw 10y agoI really wished HN supported markdown personally. Edit: I found the formatting doc for HN https://news.ycombinator.com/formatdoc https://news.ycombinator.com/formatdoc > Text after a blank line that is indented by two or more spaces is reproduced verbatim. (This is intended for code.) So that might be the answer to putting code on here. function say(message: string, volume: number): void { //do text to speech code here } but still markdown would be nicer. just do and depending on the phaser/styling it will even do code syntax coloring to increase readability. ```typescript new line with the code ``` (Edit again: Without the 2 spaces, HN put my markdown example all on one line) I guess moving HN to markdown could be done. Just say all posts after X date are markdown(or add a boolean to the post in the DB saying so. Then have the editor have like a preview button(but I know HN likes to be lite on JS stuff) but the md could be generated server-side, but do the preview client side.

- jnordwick 10y agoI love that game. The simplicity of it is amazing, but the depth that came out of it. Purest game of skill you can find.
- Radim 10y agocough Go cough
- jnordwick 10y agoHuman psychology dwarfs go in complexity
- oskarth 10y agoApples and oranges. Might as well compare Go with the Universe and call it a day. The right way to measure the skill required for a game is how many tiers you can construct where each tier reliably beats the one below it. I.e. ELO or something like it. That said, who cares? They are both beautiful and deep in their own way.
- Razengan 10y agoDoes it though? Human psychology may just seem complex to humans, as we have to look from within the maze, not from outside or above it. I wonder if the first alien species we encounter would consider us elaborate or simple..
- 50CNT 10y agoThat depends on who finds who. Assuming that technological advancement is directly related to cultural refinement, that is the question. Well, crude but mighty is also an option. We could be the Huns ravaging distant worlds.
- therein 10y agoGo is simply an amazing game. While playing it, I can't help but draw parallels with cell automata.
- kdbg 10y agoThis wasn't an official training method, but when I was in the Canadian Army we would sometimes play Diplomacy and call it training.
- Tomte 10y agoI once tried my hand in it. I had read lots and lots of strategy articles on the web, planned all my deviant schemes in my head, and finally signed up to a newbie PBEM diplomacy game. I'm probably the first Englishman in the history of the game who never even got off that damn island.
- iansowinski 10y agoThis game is so good. Last time I played in 10 persons (2 for each country) - game became even more complex and exiting!
