what about the nes classic which came out a long time ago and they're clearly trying NOT to sell??

I don't really see what the NES classic has going for it, personally - the interface is basically the only thing it has over any pi-based solution, and even that's debatable, depending on how much of a retroarch loyalist you are.

    Emulation is not inherently illegal, and even if it was I'd imagine that the people who just want to play some NES games probably don't give half a shit.

      Emulation is not inherently illegal No, but downloading the game ROMs almost always is.

        Not really. This heavily depends on jurisdiction. Downloading isn't universally illegal (especially if you have the license for the material you're downloading), sharing is.

        I'm not sure about other countries but in the USA it's indirect copyright infringement. It's an urban myth that owning a copy makes it okay. Morally sure, but not legally.

  Is it really difficult to see why this wouldn't have value for non-technical users? I'm a developer and I still enjoy it because I don't have time to mess with a pi-based solution, and I love the original NES controller.

They're trying to sell them, they just did it badly and are now scrambling to catch up. That said, they are slowly catching up. Restock frequency has been slowly increasing. If you want one, set up alerts on brickseek.com, nowinstock.net and zoolert.com. Every few days they pop up somewhere online or locally. They're still scarce but it's possible to get them. Amazon had stock for almost an hour when I bought one a few weeks ago. Using these alerts I got two in the last month. One for me, and a second just for the controller. The official controller is even harder to find than the console.
