Ask HN: Gradle or Maven in 2017?

I am starting a new project using Spring Framework which is planned to last for a long time and am deciding on what to choose between Gradle and Maven. Last time I tried to use Gradle it was painfully slow getting dependencies so I reverted to Maven before the project got large. I see that they made some improvements with that regards but it still feels slower in a small test. Can somebody who is using Gradle now in a large project give some insight?
