  A retreat in ideology doesn't require everyone to be serfs. There's nothing mutually exclusive in having advanced technology available and not revering consumerism. I think he makes a mistake about Adam Smith. Many people might glean homo economicus from what they read of Smith, but that's not what he was aiming for at all. He just set out to best describe economics.
