On iPhones, a link to the last-used app always appears in the top-left corner when you tap on something that switches apps, and I'd say 99% of the time that is all I am looking for. The browser has its own Back button.
When I had an Android phone, the inability to predict what the Back button would do was infuriating. Sometimes it did nothing, sometimes it went back one screen, sometimes it went back ALL screens, sometimes it switched apps. An unpredictable button is worse than useless.
