I was in severe depression, for more than 1 year, had a good job, a good relationship and threw it all. Simply could not understand what was wrong with me. I did never had any contact with drugs before. After a while , and some not necessarily-recreational-experiences, I could understand better a whole new spectrum of ideas. It's not so black and white.
