I don't remember the $60. I remember that at some point custom domains with SSL where tied to GSuite in some form. But it hasn't been the case in a long time. You can get your certificates anywhere you want and just upload them through the UI. I get mine from LetsEncrypt using a process somewhat automated similar to [1]. It is still a pain in the ass semi-manual job I have to do every few months but I get SSL for free. I hope they launch some better integration with LetsEncrypt in the future.
