for about 20 years, i lived and worked in the south bay/peninsula (SF bay area), and my commutes were between 12-20 miles. this realistically meant that i'd have a 30-45 minute drive to work, and 1-1.5 hour drive home. this meant i spent about 2 hours in the car each day, which wasn't actually "bad".
however, a couple of years back i quit my palo also startup job, moved to berkeley, and got a job in the CS research department at UC Berkeley.
this means i live 1.5 miles from work, and on nice days i walk (35 minutes), or take the bus (about the same as walking).
i gotta tell ya: i do not miss driving to work every day at all. :)
