Ask HN: Should I have a Copyright Certificate?

We're a US based company and our Chinese customer has asked for a copyright certificate for software we are licensing to them. Is this something I should have? I've gotten along without it for decades. I know that the source code should have a copyright statement in it, which it does. But this is the first time I've been asked for a certificate. Any guidance would be appreciated.
