And.. why not? I've got multiple friends in my age group prematurely dead from overdose. It's not like prohibition is accomplishing anything.
- dep_b 10y agoAddicts in The Netherlands get free heroin. Without the daily hustle to find the next high people have time to think instead. A lot of them find the peace to actually quit. Actually it's really hard to keep the program going as the government doesn't like to be associated with free heroin.
- mirimir 10y agoSaying "next high" is just wrong. It's avoiding withdrawal aka your own personal hell.
- misja111 10y agoOnly very serious cases can get free heroin in The Netherlands. Some of the criteria: you have to be at least 5 years addicted, you need to have tried methadon to get over your addiction first, you need to be a daily user and need to have bad physical or mental health. None of those people quit after having been admitted to the program. But they do get a better life and are not forced to be criminals anymore.
- dsmithatx 10y agoCheckout Denmark. They had a huge problem with robberies and started giving legal pure Heroin shots to users. They also helped them find jobs. No more deaths and no more black market for Heroin. Hence burglaries also went away. It looks like our current President is looking at cracking down on pot again though so, I don't imagine we'll have a sensible drug policy anytime soon. Only one motivated by profits.
- interfixus 10y agoWhich Denmark is this? Doesn't resemble the one I live in. Neither the robberies problem nor the legal pure heroin, and most certainly not the disappearance of burglaries - not statistically, not anecdotally, and not according to the several people of my acquaintance who have had it happen to them.

- hive_mind 10y agoIn the USA, there's a fantasy Denmark that exists in the media. In the fantasy Denmark, there's no crime, all the women are hot blondes who never get fat, there's cheap weed every where (and apparently free clean heroin), the furniture is sleek, all the men are feminists who never objectify women (there's no porn), the school system is fantastic (every child is good at math), the healthcare is free and high-quality, education is universal, free and high quality, and there are plenty of jobs for everyone (and high quality ones too!). Pretty much like the rest of fantasy Europe.
- peteretep 10y ago> the healthcare is free and high-quality > Pretty much like the rest of fantasy > Europe. Isn't high-quality healthcare that's "free at the point of use" available in most of real Western Europe too?
- icantdrive55 10y agoIf you gave them Bupenorpine, we might not have this problem? Free Bupenorpine, and don't make patients just through hoops to get it. And don't make doctors go to special classes in order to prescribe it. Yes it's one drug for another, but I feel it might be easier to taper off Bupenorpine. And yes--there will always be those that abuse it, but nothings perfect. Subutex is in genetic form, but is still very expensive. I don't know why. It's cheap compared to heroin though. The average person wouldn't need Suboxone, which has Nalaxone in it, but the powers at be think all addicts gave no self-control. My bigger question is why are Americans so misserable--they would try heroin. I don't buy it's just because of the Vicodin script the doctor ordered. I feel they were misserable before, and the opiate just made their existence a bit better--at least at first? As Americans we need to lighten up. We need to work on making life here less stressful.
