I'm just impressed they were able to get so much without ML. And the fact they really distrusted ML for giving weird bugs and edge cases. Even back then, everyone just assumed they were using ML, and in fact it was just the opposite. I assume most of the core systems of Search are the same today, even if they may have added some ML to it now.
