I think MobileMe uses ActiveSync. They were both introduced at the same time. They both have the same exact features. Anyone running Exchange or an ActiveSync licensee (such as Zimbra) can also support the same features.

It uses SyncML. And you can't simulate it, because hostnames are hardcoded and you'd have a problem getting SSL cert for domain you don't own.

MobileMe uses XMPP for push. But true, anyone with Exchange or ActiveSync can support the same features on an iPhone.
