Here we're talking about one modern country invading another. It's just the land changing owners - you, as a citizen, never really owned it anyway. It belongs to the ruling class and it doesn't really matter who they are. We're all one people, we should have one language and one culture. Every modern country has the concepts you outlined above. If the new government doesn't treat you humanely, you can always take civil action to plead for your rights. What's the difference if you speak Swedish, Finnish or Russian? None. What's the difference if you're Orthodox, Catholic or Muslim? None. What's the difference in who takes your taxes? None. The system is always the same, so why should I care that some fat politician will get killed by another fat politician who wants to be the one taking the taxes? Hell, I'll pay to learn his language, too. War only makes sense when they're coming to actually kill you, not when they're coming so that they'll be the one taking the taxes, rather than the current pigs.
- Nokinside 10y ago>The system is always the same, Russian and Finnish systems are not the same. Not even close.
- entropyneur 10y agoYes, but the difference between them is nowhere close to the difference between slavery and freedom or life and death.
- fjdlwlv 10y agoThe Russian government has killed more of its own citizens than any war has.
- entropyneur 10y agoI am a card-carrying "russophobe" and I don't have a faintest idea of what you are talking about. Stalin? Then you can make the same statement about German government, but it's not very useful. Chechen wars? But those were actually wars. I am out of ideas at this point.

You may see yourself as a non-1% with no particular ethnicity or religion, but there are poor Muslims who would rather die than be rich Catholics, and there are poor Finns who would rather die than be rich Russians. I understand that you don't fit in those categories. But there are actual human beings that do.
- entropyneur 10y agoThen let them volunteer to die for it! But the existence (or even plurality) of poor Finns preferring death over becoming Russians doesn't justify forcing those who don't share their sentiment to die with them.
- dropit_sphere 10y agoThere are two things, one proveable and one unproveable, that I don't think you understand: 1. You are very much in the minority. The vast majority of people have some amount of ethnic, religious, or nationalist pride. They want to be ruled by one of their own. They are not eager to die for this, but are often willing to do so, as long as they're not being made chumps of. 2. They're right, and you're wrong. Or, to put it another way, their way promotes the success of their civilization, and yours does not. This seems fairly intuitive, as what we're discussing here is the willingness to die for one's civilization. Should it surprise anyone that the willingness to die for a civilization helps that civilization? I really need to make some sort of Selfish Gene type simulator for these conversations.
- entropyneur 10y agoI never argued with #1. And you are wrong on #2. My way promotes our civilization, theirs is just an echo of the civilizations of the past.
