I think the same applies to eating. Since we can eat, we don't have to produce energy using sunlight like plants do. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

  Considering there are plants that also eat, it can't be too bad.

  A plant has to collect sunshine for a whole season to produce a couple of fruiting bodies that you can eat in minutes. I'd say heterotrophy wins.
