I worked in IT at a university for 7 years. I do not see this saving money over the 5 year term. It probably would have made more sense to relocate the IT staff out of the Bay area to a less costly location, but still be in the same time zone and able to be on site if needed. Looking at the map, the university looks land-locked and unable to expand. The idea of getting more office or classroom space by eliminating onsite IT was probably enticing, in addition to the expected cost savings.
- calvinbhai 10y agoOf late I have felt that this is the technique used by companies to get ride of older and expensive employees. A few years later they'll find that outsourcing is not worth it , and start hiring younger people again. That's a cheaper way to reduce healthcare and other costs that the employer has to pay for every employee
- jordanb 10y agoI think you're right and you can spot check it by looking at some of the photos of the laid off workers in various articles about this move. They all appear to be in their 50s at least.
