Left, or was expelled?
- pjc50 10y agoI was going by wikipedia "He emigrated to France with his family in 1956 due to the rise of antisemitism in Egypt.", but if we click through to the source for that statement we get http://www.jta.org/2017/02/25/news-opinion/united-states/u-s-authorities-almost-deport-french-jewish-holocaust-era-scholar http://www.jta.org/2017/02/25/news-opinion/united-states/u-s... (caution, stupid modal) which says "He and his family were forced out of Egypt in 1956 under anti-Semitic measures instituted by the Nasser regime." NPOV working about as well as it usually does there.
- a_bonobo 10y agoWikipedia on the Nasser expulsions, didn't know about this before: >As a result of the Suez Crisis, Nasser brought in a set of regulations imposing rigorous requirements for residency and citizenship as well as forced expulsions, mostly affecting British and French nationals and Jews with foreign nationality, as well as many Egyptian Jews. Some 25,000 Jews, almost half of the Jewish community left in 1956, mainly for Israel, Europe, the United States and South America. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamal_Abdel_Nasser https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamal_Abdel_Nasser
