Maybe the US is different, but I've been commuting on my bike, on public roads in a major city, for literally two decades. Admittedly I've had a few accidents over the years, but none that drew blood (as far as I remember), and certainly not yearly. Either you live in a dangerous place, or you know bad riders :-)
