It doesn't pass the eye test to me. I think you could definitely say that mass media is bigger, and within it there are pockets of excellent journalism that have the features you describe. But these standouts are far too easily drowned in a glut of misinformation, editorializing, listicles, and so on. And so it becomes really easy to dismiss 'the media' when 'the media' is far from a homogeneous industry. Even certain websites aren't homogeneous - I don't know that your average reader would know the difference between BuzzFeed and BuzzFeed News, for example.
