Animations are a lot more useful than no animations, if used correctly. I love material design's principles on this regard, where animation is used to convey how the app works (where a menu came from, what will happen if clicking on something). As for the examples, the author needs a faster computer or connection, all the apps mentioned that I've used don't feel sluggish at all. This includes Slack, which although takes a while when first connecting, it runs great after that. I guess the way I see it is, animation isn't bad, but it can be used ineffectively, but like anything else.
