So this is how the uprising happens.
First they came for the factory workers. Then they came for the accountants. Then they came for the drivers...
Then they came for me.
- astrodust 10y agoClearly we should bring a bot to coding interviews.
- wybiral 10y agoNah, the bots will just use it as training data.
- tomjakubowski 10y agoWhew, that's fortunate. The robot programmers of the future will know how to invert a binary tree, but not how to write a CRUD web app full of boring business logic.
- flukus 10y agoSkynet will kill us all by redesigning manhole covers.
- petra 10y agoHard in training, easy in battle.
- jgorn 10y agoBut can a bot pass a whiteboard session?
- notduncansmith 10y agoCan a bot meet diversity quotas?
- whorleater 10y agoAre bots minorities?
- wybiral 10y agoOh, for sure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iziP0cQhOFY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iziP0cQhOFY
- tonmoy 10y agoI mean that's how most circuit designers lost their jobs to CAD/EDA tools, why should software engineers be different?
- wybiral 10y agoDon't fuel my paranoia. I'm researching luddism right now.
- natoliniak 10y agoautomation of software development is inevitable as there is huge financial incentive to do so. Businesses view developers as expensive middle men between them and the product -- much like the assembly line workers in a factory. I am betting that typical crud business apps and majority of web development will be the first fields experience heavy automation, which also happen to be the areas where the vast majority of software jobs exist today. But this won't happen overnight, so lets enjoy the good times while they are rolling :)
- yestoallthat 10y agoNothing (in the league of things we are discussing) is inevitable, it's a result of choices, sometimes masked with rationalizations of how things are inevitable. For me good times start where there are people with both feet on their own liberate square meter to have fun times with, to the rest I can only say "connect me to whoever told you this".
- tluyben2 10y agoI hope we reach that phase, but so far it does not look promising. We'll get there, but I don't think it'll be in my lifetime. I hope we do though, I'm up for a career change.
- petra 10y agoI don't think businesses are having a great success in automating developers, and it doesn't seem a technology problem, we've got some interesting but relatively unused(and a bit old) technologies(spiralgen, apache-isis/naked-objects) , so it seems more like an organizational issue and those are tough to solve.
