There's something very wrong in the world when the people who invent things aren't the main beneficiary of their own inventions.
Edit: A guy downloads 9.7GB of other people's work, walks off with it, and sells it. Flushing years of work from hundreds of engineers down the toilet. You down voters really support that? Amazing.
- the_economist 10y agoI imagine that throughout human history this has been the case far often than not.
- untilHellbanned 10y agoOtto was a YC company so there's your answer. People condone a lot of awful if they 1) make money off it; 2) Have some emotional connection to it
- danjoc 10y agoI wasn't aware of that. Thank you for risking down votes to bring that to light.
- justin 10y agoIt's untrue. Otto was not a YC company.
- changdizzle 10y agoAs far as I know Otto wasn't YC - are you sure you're not thinking of Cruise (which was acquired by GM)?
- CardenB 10y agoHe could be thinking of starsky robotics
- justin 10y agoThis not true. Why would you spread this lie?
- asadlionpk 10y agoCruise is the one you are looking for.
- xxbondsxx 10y ago> You down voters really support that? Amazing. They are probably misinterpreting your comment; at first I thought you meant Levandowski was the one who invented the LIDAR components, so he should be financially rewarded outside the normal Google comp system (by doing this whole steal-then-get-acquired strategy)
- mempko 10y agoWhat's absolutely hilarious is that a lot of the self-driving tech was originally funded by US, the American Citizens and google simply used it and worked on it further. Maybe every American should get shares in Waymo!
- kirubakaran 10y agoThey do, through taxes that Google pays.
- edblarney 10y ago"There's something very wrong in the world when the people who invent things aren't the main beneficiary of their own inventions" Anyone can be the primary beneficiary of their own invention, it they want to pay their own salary, build their own products, hire their own layers, sell their wares etc.. If you want to collect $150K/year while you do R&D for Google, which may produce not that much, while you leverage all of their knowledge, investment, user-base tools etc - well, then you fork over the rights to Google. 'Inventing' something is not just some guy coming up with an idea, and then making that 'invention' worth something is usually harder than inventing it in the first place.
